Letter from the UK: It Was Twitter Wot Closed News of the World

After days of mounting pressure following allegations of phone hacking, James Murdoch has sensationally announced that the News of the World is to publish its final issue this weekend.

Advertisers had been jumping from the News International ship at an increasing rate after a story in the Guardian alleged that News of the World journalists had accessed voicemails left on the handset owned by the murdered 13-year-old Milly Dowler.

A huge hate campaign against the newspaper brewed on Twitter, with messages such as “campaigning for Sarah’s Law, while hacking into missing child’s phone & giving family false hope. #notw” being heavily retweeted along with calls for editor-at-the-time Rebekah Brooks’ resignation.

Intense pressure was put also put on brands who continued to support the newspaper through advertising. As such, over the last few days the likes of Halifax, Co-Op, Vauxhall, Butlins, Virgin and Ford all pulled their advertisements from the Sunday newspaper, with Procter & Gamble, Asda and Tesco considering following suit.
